History and medal information - Meritorious Service Medals were first Instituted 19th December 1845 to the Army, and were originally only plain crimson until 1916 when white edges were added and changed again 1916 -1917, when the three White stripes was issued. The Royal Air Force, Royal Marines and Royal Navy also have MSM'S.
