History and medal information - Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-1918 Medal This bronze award with it's dramatic reverse side scene recognised the vital services of the merchant navy during the war just over 133,000 were awarded with one or more voyages in a designated war zone. Obverse - Mackennel profile of King George V, Reverse - a steamship ploughing through an angry sea, with a sinking submarine and a sailing vessel in the background, the whole enclosed in a laurel wreath.
