History and medal information - The Victoria Cross is one of the rarest gallantry medals in the world and only 1,358 full size medals were issued to servicemen/ women. Created in January 1854 by Queen Victoria the original medal ribbon was royal red for the Army and Blue for the Navy. (No air force in 1854).It was then changed in 1912 and was going to be red for all three services but the Navy and Air force objected on the grounds some of the Navy would have blue and some red, so they came to a compromise and added blue to the red ribbon to make Crimson which the ribbon still is to this day. The full size medal has the name rank and unit on the reverse side of the V. This medal is hand made from the bronze metal of the cascabels of two cannons captured in the Crimea (Sebastapol) from the Russians.
