BRITISH MILITARY HISTORY - WORLD WAR 2 - DUNKIRK OPERATION . Campaign - World War 2. Date – 1940. Locations – Dunkirk, France. In late 1940 the Allied Armies consisting of the BEF British Expeditionary Force and French Army had been pushed back by the German forces in mainland Europe.
The continued German advance had pushed the allies into a smaller and smaller amount of ground and as Dunkirk was still an operational post and key to the supply of men, materials and logistics to the BEF and French armies this became a lifeline port the allies desperatly needed to keep and a possible escape route if needed. There was a serious of defensive positions known as boxes which the allied prepared and these were 12 defensive boxes around the whole region of the coast. Towards the end these became crucial. Much of the allied armour and heavy equipment could not be transported by ship from this port so had to be left albeit destroying their own vehicles to ensure they couldnt be captured and used by the enemy.
